Dr. Marta Makowska
Dr. Makowska graduated with a Master of Arts in Sociology from the University of Warsaw in 2004 and received her Ph.D. at the School of Social Sciences of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2010 by defending her doctoral thesis, Ethical Standards of Pharmaceutical Marketing. Shortly afterward, she published a book based on her dissertation that was awarded first place in the Verba Veritatis Competition as the best work on business ethics. In 2013, she was selected for a Mobility Plus Scholarship to study in the U.S., where she worked as Visiting Scholar in the Pharmaceutical & Healthcare Marketing Department at Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) in Philadelphia. From research as a Visiting Scholar, Dr. Makowska published articles and her next book entitled Ethical Challenges of Cooperation between Medical Students and Pharmaceutical Industry: A Comparative Study of the Situation in Poland and the USA in 2016. Recipient of the KoĹ›ciuszko Foundation Scholarship, she returned to SJU during the summer of the 2018-19 academic year to work with her colleague, Dr. Sillup, again and conduct research about the gender differences with regard to the way female and male physicians respond to payments from the pharma industry. Dr. Makowska resides in Warsaw with her engineer husband and two children.
